Create a Hoop House
A hoop house is a great addition to your garden that can extend your warm temperature vegetables gardening a month longer and earlier during the season. In general, a hoop house is a portable greenhouse that can be moved from one garden bed to another in less than an hour or so. It can protect your plants from excessive rain, wind, and increase the temperature around 5-10 degrees (and more). It will allow you to rotate the plantings and protect small seedlings from severe weather and frost. You can choose to build either a mini hoop house that will protect a raised garden bed, or a large walk in hoop house that can house a variety of plants. Here are the steps on how to build a sturdy hoop house.
You will need:
1. 10 piece of 25 foot lengths of 1 inch diameter flexible PVC tubing
2. 5 piece 10 foot lengths of rigid 1 inch diameter PVC
3. 26×26 foot sheet of 6mm plastic sheeting
4. white or black tape
5. 20 piece 2 foot long of 7/8 inch re-bar
Steps:
1. First, insert the 2-foot long pieces of 7/8 inch diameter re-bar about 1-foot into the ground and 1-foot apart.16 feet from the first row, make a second row of re-bar.
2. Then, search for the center point of each length of flexible PVC. Use a duct tape to attach the center point of the flexible PVC to one of the 10 feet lengths of the rigid PVC. Wrap the tape over and below across both diagonals where the two pipes cross. Repeat the taping process until you have all the 10 flexible PVC pieces attached to the pipe and 1-foot apart.
3. Next, bend the flexible PVC into arcs and place each end over two pieces of re-bar that are 16 feet apart. The position of the rigid pole is at the apex of the arc formed by the PVC when it is placed over the re-bar. Attach the remaining four pieces of rigid PVC down side of the row of hoops using duct tape. Attach one on each side at ground level and another on each side about your hip height.
4. To cover down on each open end, drapes the 8 feet plastic sheeting over the hoop house. Start from the fifth rib of the hop house. Use a staple to staple every 2-inch down the ridge line going from the fifth rib to the front of the hoop house. Pull the plastic tightly as you go. To make sure that the plastic has even tension, return to the fifth crib and repeat stapling each 2 inches going towards the rear of the hoop house. For each side support, repeat in the middle and work towards the front. Return to the middle and work towards the back.
5. Finally, cut the plastic sheeting from the center point on the ground up to the ridge pole. During the day, allow the pollinators such as bees and butterflies to access your plants and temperature control by rolling the sheeting back on each side and tie it open.

The Retractable Roof Production System™ for Vegetables and Fruit
The Retractable Roof Production System™ can help growers increase Profitability
The Retractable Roof Production System™ allows growers in warm climates to uniquely utilize the benefits of the natural outdoor environment and the protection of a controlled greenhouse environment to lower input costs while:
* Extending harvest seasons in order to realize the higher prices of the shoulder seasons and extend supply season to distributors
* Increasing yields which reduces the fixed costs per case
* Eliminating the supply disruptions due to erratic weather… so that growers never lose a customer
* Growing organically or chemical free in order to achieve higher revenues and lower production costs
* Increasing the shelf life

The Retractable Roof Production System™ can increase profit per kg or pound 200%-500% and generate a return on investment in 2 to 5 years depending on the crop and growing environment.
* Grow with less…
o area (smaller footprint)
o water, labor, energy, agrichemicals
o losses due to excessive cold, heat, wind, rain in the open field
o losses due to limitations of conventional greenhouse production systems
* Feeding more due to...
o higher yields per plant
o longer harvest seasons
o longer shelf life
Compared to farmers growing in the open field,
retractable roofs can:
* Help harvest crops earlier and for longer periods.
* Improve yields 200% to 300% per sq m allowing for a 50% to 75% reduction in area planted
* Reduce water usage 50% per hectare and up to 75% per kg of tomato
* Increase the natural disease and insect resistance by protecting plants from excessive transpiration
* Reduce the insect reproduction rate
* Reduce and/or eliminate the use of agrichemicals for insect and disease control
* Increase the shelf life of fruits and vegetables
For growers using nethouses or low tech greenhouses,
retractable roofs can:
* Help harvest crops earlier and for longer periods.
* Improve yields 60% to 150%
* Double the yield of large and extra large fruit
* Produce fruit that meets the quality standards of both food service and super markets
* Prevent the pollination problems typical in greenhouses by lowering humidity levels
* Increase the natural disease and insect resistance by increasing the cuticle thickness of the plants
* Reduce the insect reproduction rate by reducing temperature and humidity levels
Retractable Roofs help make food production sustainable and environmentally friendly
* Up to a 85% reduction in water usage per kg of fruit compared to open field production.
* Fossil fuel for heating is reduced or eliminated
o Enhanced cooling capabilities allow for production in warmer climates.
o Retracting the roof allows for enhanced heating of soil allowing the earth to act as a heat sink during the night.
* Minimal electricity is required since motors run intermittently and one 2hp motor can close up to 100,000 ft2 (9,000 sq m2) of roof in 7 minutes.
* Reduced agrichemical usage is beneficial for workers, food quality and ground water.
* Reduced landfill waste since retractable roof coverings last 2 to 3 times longer than conventional greenhouse plastic and since plastic mulch may not be necessary thereby eliminating the purchase, installation, removal and disposal of the plastic mulch.
